Required and Optional

According to the state regulations, all assisted living facilities must provide certain basic services to residents as part of the monthly fee.

The State regulations also require that an individualized service plan be developed for each resident. The service plan is a detailed outline of service that will be provided by the facility, including who will provide each service, how often, and how it will be provided. 

Required Services

Assistance with Activities of daily living

  • Eating
  • Bathing
  • Toileting
  • Grooming (brushing teeth, combing hair, shaving)
  • Dressing
  • Moving around the facility(with or without a cane, walker or wheelchair)

Meals

Meals are served in a common dining area, three time a day seven days a week. Snacks are provided at intervals during the day. Menus are approved by a licensed dietician or a licensed nutritionist. However, if the preparation of the diet is beyond the capability of the facility, the resident my need to be discharged.

 

It is important for potential resident/or their representative to discuss their dietary needs with the facility manager before signing the Resident Agreement.

Monitoring

The manager or staff is required to monitor the resident daily to ensure that the service plan is being properly implemented. If the plan states that the resident will be reminded to go to the dining room for each meal because he/she has memory problems, the manager or designee must check to be sure this is being done.

 

 

Laundry and Housekeeping

Housekeeping services must be provided to keep all areas of the facility clean. All facilities are required to provide some laundry service to residents, but the amount of laundry service provided under the monthly fee may vary. Check the Resident Agreement as some programs charge extra for laundry in excess of the basic amount.

Social and Spiritual Activities

The facility must provide opportunities for residents to interact in social settings. In some cases, social activities are provided in the facility. In other cases, residents may be transported to a local senior center or another setting for activities. The spiritual activitlies provided must be consistent with the individual’s preference. It would not be appropriate, to take all the residents to a church service if that service did not reflect the beliefs of all the residents involved.

Medication Management

The manager’s functional assessment of the resident includes an evaluation of the individual’s ability to take medication. Some residents are able to do this independently, others need reminders or physical help, while ore impaired residnetss need to be given medications by staff. for all residents except those who take their medications independently, the regulations state that, within the 14 day following a resident’s admission into the facility, the manager must arrange for a health care professional to review the medication regimen of the resident. This review ensures that medications will be given safety and appropriately. All assisted living facilities are required to arrange for a professional review of each resident’s medications on a regular basis.
